Medusa, the snake-haired woman of Greek Mythology, is the symbol of female power and rage. In the Roman poet Ovid's telling, Medusa was once a beautiful maiden, 'the jealous aspiration of many suitors'. She was punished by Athena and turned into a monster so grotesque, one look at her would turn a man to stone. According to mythology, Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who used the mirror reflection of his shield to battle Medusa without looking at her directly.
